Muskegon County – Muskegon Community College will receive $5.6 million in capital outlay funds approved by the Michigan Legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday, June 29. The monies will be used to partially fund the $14.1 million Health and Wellness Center project on campus.

“This is the single largest capital appropriation in the school’s history – exceeding the $4.7 million for the Science Center,” explained MCC President Dale Nesbary. “It gives us the ability to collaborate with the health care community so that our students will have opportunities to work in clinical settings on our campus. The facility will also be open to other nursing programs in the region.”

The funds were included in an omnibus appropriations bill supporting capital outlay (infrastructure) projects for K-12, community colleges and universities along with operational funding for state agencies.

“We are thankful to State Rep. Jon Bumstead and his colleagues for their able assistance in helping secure the funds.”

MCC’s share of the $14.1 million project college share is $8.5 million. The project will renovate 17,000 sq. ft. of existing health center space and add 60,000 sq. ft. of new space to increase healthy lifestyle opportunities for students and community members. Included in the project are a simulation lab for students in health-related training programs and a nurse-managed primary care center in conjunction with Mercy Health/Trinity to provide greater health access for residents of the community.

Construction of the facility is set to begin later this summer with an anticipated completion date of Fall 2017.
