Walmart Great Value frozen berry blend, sent to 16 states, was recalled due to possible E. Coli contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said this week, but Michigan consumers should be safe.

California-based Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. first announced the recall on Sept. 2, saying one lot of Walmart’s Great Value frozen organic triple berry blend may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28 (E. coli O145), according to the company announcement on the FDA’s website.

“Consumers who have Great Value Organic Triple Berry 10-ounce with lot code 6040 01-6 should not consume it. The product should be discarded or returned to Walmart for a full refund,” the company said. “There are no illnesses associated with this specific product to date, and this is market action is taken as a precautionary measure following traceback information of the previous recall.”

The affected frozen berry blend was not sent to Michigan’s Walmart stores.

E. Coli ― described as E. Coli O145, the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in the company announcement ― is a group of bacteria that can cause issues to a person’s gut or urinary tract. Common symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody) and vomiting.

“While most healthy individuals recover within a week, some infections may result in a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems,” the announcement said.

Months earlier, the same company Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. initiated a recall for GreenWise-brand frozen organic blueberries on July 3, which expanded on July 29 to include GreenWise frozen mixed berries, all sold at Publix stores ― of which none are located in Michigan. The GreenWise-brand frozen organic blueberries have been linked to 17 illnesses, including six hospitalizations, as of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s last update on Sept. 3.
