GVSU hires new soccer coach
From the Tribune Newswire
Allendale – GVSU women’s soccer head coach Jeff Hosler announced Tuesday morning that Annette Stromberg has been promoted from graduate assistant to assistant coach for the three time defending national champion GVSU soccer program. Stromberg served as a graduate assistant coach for the 2014 and 2015 campaigns and has worked with the Laker goalkeepers as well as being the program’s recruiting coordinator.
“Annette was a tremendous asset to me as an assistant coach at Alma College in all aspects of the program, it was a no-brainer to bring her along to join me at Grand Valley State two years ago”, said Hosler. “Her time here at Grand Valley State has given her more specific roles, and one of the areas in which she has excelled at is understanding and teaching the position of goalkeeper. Annette’s influence in that position can be seen in numerous examples over the past two years in her work with Andrea Strauss and Emily Maresh, both first year starters for the past two seasons. Additionally, she also came to Grand Valley State with some great club soccer contacts, and continues to extend those relationships throughout the midwest and nationally, which has allowed us to go out and get some of the best players in the country.”
As the goalkeeper coach for the Lakers, Stromberg has worked with two first year starters in her time at Grand Valley State, coaching Andrea Strauss in the 2014 campaign and working with Maresh in the 2015 season. In those two seasons, Laker goalkeepers have compiled a 45-3-3 record with 33 shutouts, while allowing just 23 goals and saving 87 percent of shots on goal. In 2014, Stromberg guided Strauss to a 22-2-2 record with 16 shutouts as she garnered All-GLIAC Honorable Mention and All-Midwest Second Team honors.
During the 2015 season, Stromberg helped Maresh post a 19-1-1 record with 13 shutouts and a 0.48 goals-against-average on her way to D2CCA All-Region First Team and NSCAA Midwest Region Third Team honors. Maresh was also named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after posting a shutout in the national championship game.
Stromberg was an assistant coach at Alma under coach Hosler for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Prior to joining the Scots’ coaching staff, she was a four-year varsity midfielder that played in 82 games and tallied 30 points. As a sophomore in 2010, Stromberg helped Alma capture its first-ever Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season title. The following season, she guided the Scots to the 2011 MIAA Tournament crown and an NCAA Tournament berth.
