Though people will talk for years about how the Michigan-Western Michigan game ended, I will forever remember the incredible grace and class shown by Western Michigan University’s president, Russ Kavalhuna, and head football coach, Lance Taylor. The next day, in a long press conference, they gave us a master class in taking an unbelievable twist of fate and accepting it with their heads held high.

What a great lesson for their team, all students, and, for that matter, all of us.

While my late big brother, Mark, a proud WMU graduate, wouldn’t have been happy with how the game ended, he would have been proud of his school’s leadership.

A notable medical note you might have missed:

A new study has shown that women who take hormone replacement therapy to ease menopause symptoms are 16% less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease. Shouldn’t that study from the University of East Anglia (UEA) be a bigger story?

Paul W. Smith is host of “Focus” on WJR-AM (760) from noon to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday.
